Boston Marathon About Endurance

The Herald reports on the formation of the World Marathon Majors Series:

Yesterday at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel, directors and executives of the five most prestigious and lucrative 26.2-mile races in the world — Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City — announced the formation of the World Marathon Majors Series.
The two-year series, aimed at increasing the profile of the sport, will award $500,000 to its men’s and women’s winners based on a points system.

As our mom (who ran the Boston Marathon a few years back) is fond of telling us, Boston is the only marathon where runners must qualify with a time-trial to run the race, so we are a bit weary of grouping it with the rest of these plebian less-than-elite marathons.

Our favorite quote comes from New York City Marathon race director Mary Wittenberg :

Our sport rewards endurance…

Ahh, see, now I understand why I'm not a marathoner.
