Are you cool enough?

Word on the street is that everyone wants an invite, and nobody got one. At least nobody cool. Rumors are flying about tight security and well-planned crash attempts. Tonight's Barneys opening party is gearing up to be the social trainwreck of the year and, make no mistake about it, our lack of an invite will affect our current and future coverage of the chain.

With calls and e-mails pouring in requesting party tickets, says Barneys VP of publicity Dawn Brown, ''We deal with them on a case-by-case basis." So what happens tonight if you show up sans invite? ''Tell people not to throw things at me, please," says Brown anxiously.
