Stealing Bronze for Heroin
What is this city coming to? We're being overrun by crazed, statuary-stealing junkies hellbent on melting down every bronze plaque and sculpture they can get their hands on to sell as scrap to feed their addiction. From a Globe article:
The rising price of bronze and other metals is thought to be behind a rash of thefts of plaques displayed to honor war veterans or local leaders, according to police.
…
"It's not going to stop until they get caught," Melrose police Sgt. Barry Campbell said. "Let's say one of those plaques weighs 25 to 50 pounds. They're making 50 to 100 bucks a shot. That buys a lot of heroin."
The only silver lining we can see here is that someday the price of concrete and brick may rise so high that junkies will begin dismantling the borg-turd that is Government Center.
